President Jonathan says his name has brought good luck to Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday Saturday May 25th that his first name has brought some good luck to Nigeria. While granting an interview yesterday, the president said:
"Traditional societies attach some values to names. That is why people select good names for their children. In the scriptures sometimes, when God sends you on some special assignment, He could even direct, ‘change the name of this child from this to that. But the name in itself does not make much difference because even from my village, there is one of my peers that also answers Goodluck.  Another one that is a little older than me answers Lucky from my small village and I didn’t see the good luck and lucky in them.
“In terms of bringing my name to bear in Nigerian affairs, within this period, we have our challenges. Of course, you are aware that we have our security challenges. But in spite of the security challenges, the country is moving on. I will say yes, it (his name) brought some good luck to the country.”
This is total nonsense!

Arik staff caught with N180m worth of cocaine at Heathrow airport

A female Arik staff was arrested yesterday Tuesday May 21st at Heathrow airport London for allegedly carrying cocaine worth about N180 million. Temitayo Olubunmi Daramola was arrested with 6kg of cocaine while another hostess Delita Abibimgbi was arrested for having 60 packets of cigarettes in her possession. The max limit of cigarettes any passenger is allowed to carry is 10 packs.

Security at Heathrow Airport detained Temitayo and Delita after detecting the illicit drugs in their possession. They are being held in custody by the UK authorities in London.

Arik Air has since reacted to the incident. The airline company's spokesman Banji Ola confirmed the detention of the two cabin crew members and said the airline will fully co-operate with all authorities involved in the investigation. Read the airline's statement after the cut...

"Arik Air carries out very stringent checks on all members of staff and its travelling guests ahead of all flights. It will continue to focus its attention on measures to prevent the possibility of any future similar incidents. Arik Air is a responsible Nigerian company always seeking to maintain and uphold the integrity and proud reputation of the nation".
Meanwhile the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Drug Law and Enforcement Agency, Ahmadu Giade, has ordered officials of the agency to commence investigation into the matter.

Brutal cleaver assault on man in London street is suspected terror attack

A man thought to be a serving British soldier was killed by two armed men in a frenzied attack on a London street Wednesday, in what the government is treating as a suspected act of terrorism.
Witnesses told of a gruesome scene in which the man was hit by a car, then hacked with cleavers and his body dumped in the middle of the road in Woolwich, southeast London.

The two suspects in the killing were injured in a confrontation with police and have been taken to two hospitals, where they are being treated.

CNN affiliate ITN aired a video showing a man with bloody hands and holding a meat cleaver, who says, "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you."
The man, who is black and appears to have a London accent, carries on: "The only reasons we killed this man this is because Muslims are dying daily. This British soldier is an eye for an eye a tooth for tooth.

"We apologize that women had to see this today but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don't care about you." Those statements spurred the Muslim Council of Britain to issue a strong statement to condemn the attack as "a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam," as well as to urge Muslim and non-Muslims alike "to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail."

In another video -- obtained by the British tabloid newspaper The Sun and apparently shot in the same place around the same time -- the meat-cleaver-wielding suspect apologized to women who'd witnessed the attack, before quickly adding "but in our lands our women have to see the same." "You people will never be safe," the man said. "Remove your government. They don't care about you. You think (Prime Minister) David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns? ... Get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so we can all live in peace."
The victim is believed to be a serving soldier who was based at a nearby barracks, Nick Raynsford, a member of Parliament, told CNN.

The soldier had apparently been on duty in central London and was returning to the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich when he was attacked, Raynsford said. Speaking in Paris, Prime Minister David Cameron said there were "strong indications" that the man's killing was a terrorist incident. He said he would be returning early from the official trip to handle the situation and will be back in London Wednesday night. "It is the most appalling crime," he said, speaking alongside French President Francois Hollande, who pledged solidarity with Britain in the face of terrorist threats.
Cameron declined to confirm whether the man killed was a serving soldier, while Britain's defense ministry said it was investigating to see whether that's the case. But the prime minister vowed the United Kingdom would stand firm in the face of threats to its security and "will not buckle."
UK Home Secretary Theresa May led a meeting of the country's civil emergency committee, known as COBRA, on Wednesday evening, and Cameron will chair another such meeting on Thursday.

Afterward, authorities increased security around Woolwich and all military barracks in London, a British government source said. British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said the killing was a "very shocking incident" and that the UK takes the safety of its troops "very seriously," as he headed into the COBRA meeting. London Mayor Boris Johnson tweeted: "This afternoon's attack in Woolwich is a sickening deluded and unforgivable act of violence. My thoughts are with the victim and his family." That sentiment was echoed by many others -- such as May, the home secretary, who described it as "a sickening and barbaric attack"; a "concerned" Queen Elizabeth II; and Labour Party leader Ed Millband, who predicted the "whole country will be horrified" by what he called the "appalling events." Commander Simon Letchworth told reporters in Woolwich that local officers had responded when an assault was reported at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday and a firearms unit was called to the scene. British police do not usually carry firearms. "Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police," he said. "They have both been taken to separate London hospitals and are receiving treatment for their injuries."

Eyewitnesses have given gruesome details of the killing. One, Michael Atlee told CNN he and friends heard gunshots and when they turned the corner saw a pool of blood on the sidewalk and a trail of blood leading into the road. "It just looked like a mess," Atlee said. "It just looked like a bloody mess." The man killed appeared to be wearing a T-shirt for Help for Heroes, a charity that helps military veterans, he said. Another witness, who gave his name only as James, told London's LBC 97.3 radio station that he saw two men standing by the victim. At first he thought they were trying to help the man but then saw two meat cleavers, like a butcher would have. "They were hacking at this poor guy, literally," he told the radio station, as if they were trying to remove his organs. "These two guys were crazed. They were just not there. They were just animals." The men appeared to want to be filmed, he said, saying that one of the attackers went over to a bus and asked people to take photos of him as if he wanted to be on TV. He said the two men rushed at police when they arrived, at which point shots were fired and both men went down. Lauren Collins told CNN: "I still am quite shaken at what I've seen -- I've seen a victim of an awful attack, and I've seen a body of a young man."Another witness, Woolwich Theatre owner Adrian Green, said the incident was "shocking" but did not reflect the true nature of the area. Raynsford said the military based at the centuries-old barracks had a close relationship with the local community. Woolwich is a mixed, multicultural area, he added.

Cyber-Attackers Stole $45M in Worldwide Fake ATM Card Breach

Eight defendants have been charged in the largest bank heist of its kind, a $45 million worldwide theft that took just hours using fabricated ATM cards.

Federal prosecutors said the cyber-theft was as intricate as a movie plot. "This scheme was organized for months and planned down to the minute, reminiscent of the casino heist in 'Ocean's Eleven,'" said Loretta Lynch, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York. The scheme, which started overseas, was detailed in an indictment unsealed today. Unknown hackers stole data from banks that was then encoded onto plastic cards sent to crews in two dozen countries, according to the Justice Department. The local operatives went from ATM to ATM, withdrawing millions.

Lynch said she saw photos of one defendant in New York. "Surveillance photos show his backpack getting heavier and heavier as his efforts go on," she said. According to court records, the hackers targeted a credit card processor that handled prepaid debit card transactions for Rakbank in the United Arab Emirates. In a separate attack, the hackers, who are unknown to prosecutors, targeted a processor that serviced MasterCard prepaid debit cards issued by the Bank of Muscat in Oman.

In each case, the cards were compromised, withdrawal limits were eliminated and the stolen data was encoded onto plastic cards distributed to local operatives in 27 countries, officials said. In total, more than 4,500 ATM transactions were conducted in approximately 20 countries around the globe.
"Instead of guns and masks, this cyber crime organization used laptops and malware," Lynch said.
The New York cell withdrew $3 million of the total $45 million stolen. In 25 minutes, the defendants and their co-conspirators conducted approximately 750 fraudulent transactions totaling nearly $400,000 at more than 140 different cash machines, according to the Department of Justice.
Seven members of the New York cell have been arrested. The eighth, Alberto Yusi Lajud-Pena, said to be the ringleader, was found murdered last month in the Dominican Republic.

The men have been charged variously with conspiracy to commit access device fraud, money laundering conspiracy and money laundering. "New technologies and the rapid growth of the Internet have eliminated the traditional borders of financial crimes," said Steven Hughes, special agent in charge of the Secret Service office in New York. The defendants also invested the stolen funds in portable luxury goods, including expensive watches and cars. Two Rolex watches, a Mercedes SUV, a Porsche Panamera, and hundreds of dollars in cash have at this point been seized by the U.S. government.

If convicted, the defendants face a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment on each of the money laundering charges and 7 1/2 years on the conspiracy to commit access device fraud charge, as well as restitution and as much as $250,000 in fines. Law enforcement agencies in Japan, Canada, Germany, Romania and 12 other countries were involved in the investigation. The financial sector as a whole faces thousands of attempted cyber attacks per day -- from "probes" and "pings" to various attempts at disruption, intrusion or fraud, according to Greg Garcia, an advisor to the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center. However, most of the attacks are stopped. The industry has many sophisticated tools and experts making the efforts more complicated and expensive for the criminals.
