Man Kidnaps Self, Demands N2million Ransom From Brothers
The police in Enugu State have arrested one Samuel Ani after he allegedly “kidnapped himself” and demanded N2 million ransom from his brothers.
Samuel saw his own kidnap as the quickest way of getting financial assistance from his brothers, who he labeled “stingy fellows”.
However, it has ended up badly for the coffin dealer, an indigene of Ugwuaji, Enugu South Local Government Area.
It was gathered that he faked kidnap and hid himself for six days at a bush behind his shop situated at Gariki axis of Awkunanaw also in Enugu South, from where he was making telephone calls to his two younger brothers in a very convincing tone that he had been abducted and that the sum of N2 million was required to get him out of the purported kidnappers den, else he would be killed.
The spokesman of the police in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, who confirmed the incident disclosed that the case was reported to the State Police Command, which mobilized its anti- kidnapping unit.
According to him, “when Samuel intensified his call that the purported kidnappers were on the verge of killing him if his people cannot bring the money, which was later reduced to N1.2m, some amount of money was snt across to the account number provided by the purported kidnappers and a certain girl who went to cash the sum of initial N100, 000 sent into the account in one of the new generation banks located around Agbani road axis on 29/8/13, was tracked and picked by the operatives.
“Her revelation led to the arrest of Samuel who disclosed that he was not kidnapped but that he kidnapped himself so that his wealthy younger brothers can pay money for ransom which he will use to sort out his business dealings”
The girl was identified as one Oluchi Faith Ogbu from Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state and a fiancee to Samuel Ani.
“When interrogated, Oluchi Faith Ogbu said that the account belongs to her but was instructed by Samuel to supply the account number so that his brothers can pay the ransom via the account and that she was to cash it as soon as she receives alert of the payment and bring it to him.”
The police spokesman said Oluchi’s confession, however, led to the arrest of Samuel, who said he was not kidnapped but maintained that he kidnapped himself so that his wealthy younger brothers could pay ransom which he would use to sort out his business dealings.
He said apart from the trick he adopted, nothing would make his brothers give him any monetary assistance even though he regretted his actions.
Ani admitted that the step he took was not good in the sight of God, man or law and pleaded for forgiveness.
He said he is a father of five children but never revealed to Oluchi that he was married as he had promised to marry her

JUST IN!!!! Nigerian Iconic Celebrity...Mr Obe, is Dead!!!!!!
Iconic photographer, Peter Oyeyemi Obe, who brought the swampy gloom of the Nigerian civil war horror to public reality via his troubling and tense images, has passed on. He was 81, born 28 December 1932.
News of Mr. Obe’s passage came mid-day Sunday when his nephew, Taiwo Obe, the renowned editor and promoter of the famous professional social media site on LinkedIn, Everythingjournalism,
tweeted, quoting family sources, that the ace cameraman had “died at his residence situated on 31 Alhaji Masha/Moronu Street, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria” adding, “His first son, Femi, made the official announcement.”
The departed Mr. Obe influenced a whole generation of photojournalists on account of his adventurous and daring coverage of the 30-month Nigerian civil war in the seventies. A different genre of much younger professionals, not necessarily practicing in journalism, was also drawn by this iconoclasm, nurtured by a peculiar drive for intimacy with his subjects that were vividly realised through close-up, and wide-angle shots. Although his war photography was his signature call, he nevertheless worked across a varied landscape of photojournalism, from conflict coverage, through politics and civic life, to sports.
Working mostly in an age of black-and white photography, his peculiar drive ultimately defined an oeuvre of daunting, perhaps mysterious, and sometimes provocative image sense. He would barrel the lens menacingly towards his subjects in a probing hunt always seeking the zero-point of the subject where their soul resides. Thus, the striking individuality of his subjects, their restless search for identity and affirmation, put him ahead of peers in the exploration of the modern moments in Nigerian photography.
He was for years Chief photographer of the Daily Times but had a stint of freelance work for the Agence France Presse (AFP). The media and development group, Panos Institute, also kept some of his stocks in its London archives.
His coverage of the Nigerian civil war for the Daily Times resulted in a coffee-table book, “Civil War Pictures From Nigeria: A Decade of Crisis in Pictures.”
Mr. Taiwo Obe recorded early condolence messages of notable greats in the media showering tributes. Mr Lade Bonuola (aka Ladbone), pioneer editor and now executive consultant at The Guardian (Nigeria) wrote: “As chief cameraman of the Daily Times and I as the chief sub-editor, we worked very closely together. He never failed in supplying me terrific action photographs for the front page. Once I shouted ‘Exclusives’, I trusted he was on the way to the newsroom to supply page 1 photograph.”
Former Photo Editor at the defunct NEXT newspaper Mr Gbile Oshadipe, who currently teaches photojournalism at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, said: “We’ve lost a pioneer in photojournalism at a time novices appropriate media space and pretend to be pros.”
Using the platform of Everythingjournalism on Linkedin, other editors have also been speaking on the passage of the Mr. Obe.
Mr. Lanre Idowu, editor at the defunct ThisWeek Magazine and Democrat newspaper, and one of the most attentive historians of contemporary Nigerian media practice, wrote: “A great star has fallen from the photojournalistic firmament. I remember one of his Civil War shots. It was a great shot of a soldier’s boot. Lying by the roadside, it raised questions on the whereabouts of its owner…his fate and how the boot got there.”
One time editor of the Vanguard newspaper, Ikeddy Isiguzo, testified on how Mr. Obe “became such an institution [and] that there was nobody he could not tell he wanted his shot. Indeed it would be considered an honour if he did.”
He recalled, “One of my most vivid memories of his photos is the one of Brigadier Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Christian Chukwu and Sam Ojebode, captains of their teams, together at the centre of the National Stadium.
He got them holding a ball, beaming best smiles, to douse a mounting tension as IICC-Rangers played in the first leg of the final of the 1977 Cup Winners Cup.
Pa Obe still continued his art at a time many of his age had retired. He was truly a legend. I am not sure he even got a national honour.”
Iconoclastic writer, and journalist, Maxim Uzuato wrote: “Peter Obe the Great! They no longer make photo greats of your pedigree! Rest in the Lord, Pa!
Lighting up a sombre atmosphere, expressionist painter, writer, and former art editor at the defunct NEXT, Victor Ehikhamenor, who is himself a photographer, commented tersely but in brightness on his twitter handle @sozaboy that Mr. Obe “had a great eye.”
Mr. Obe’s Collection of photographs taken over the period from Independence in October 1960 through to the 30-month civil war represent some of the most honest if even biting records of Nigeria’s post independence history and narratives.

Boy who hid inside an Arik Plane tyre still in detention – Family pleads for his release
Miss Sonia Oikhena, elder sister of the 13-year old Nigerian stowaway boy (Daniel Oikhena, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) II)who flew from Benin to Lagos inside the wheel compartment of an aircraft, has appealed for his release from custody.
During a press conference in Benin on Saturday,Sonia said family members were worried that Daniel was still in detention eight days after the dramatic event.
She urged the Federal Government to order the security agencies to release the youngster to his family.
She expressed concern that there had been no contact with the family by those holding Daniel.
“The only contact the family had with the security agents was when the SSS in Benin invited their mother for questioning.’’
This, she stressed, had placed the family in a difficult situation over the issue.
“There has been no word from the security agencies as to where the boy was being detained or his state of health.
“We are worried and do not know where my brother is and his present health condition after flying in such a risky position.
“My brother should not be held culpable over the security lapses at the airport.
“If there had been tight security at the airport, he wouldn’t have succeeded in taking that risk of flying through the wheel of an aircraft.”
On his part, Desmond, (9), the immediate younger brother, appealed for his brother’s release “because he acted out of ignorance.’’
Desmond said he was not however surprised when the news came to them last Sunday that Daniel was in Lagos.
Desmond said his brother got the idea of hiding inside the wheel of an aircraft from foreign movies he often watched.
“Daniel has been telling us about plans to travel to America by hiding inside the wheel compartment of an aircraft.
“We slept in the same room the night before the incident and we were surprised when he woke up so early.
“He packed his school bag, removed the books and replaced them with some of his clothes and hung his rosary on his neck.
“He quietly walked out without anybody knowing his destination. When my mother started looking for him, I told her to go to the airport to search for him based on what he has been telling us.
“I want my brother released to us. We are missing him and want him back home. My family is not happy over the continued detention of our brother.
“He is just a child and must have acted out of ignorance; he needs brotherly love and guidance.
“We are appealing to those responsible for his detention to please consider us because we have no money to fight any case”, the Desmond pleaded.

I Don’t Believe In Marriage – Femi Kuti Reveals!!!
Femi Kuti is a household name, an international recording artiste with multiple awards. He wears the toga of Fela’s son and crown prince of Afro beat music. SAMUEL ABULUDE and NGOZI OSADEBAY were at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos penultimate Sunday and had a chat with him while preparing for his show. He spoke about challenges of having a live band, his women, present government among other sundry issues. This is vintage FEMI KUTI
What is your new album ‘No place for my Dream’ all about?
The purpose is to be able to inform leaders who are in power to make a change, in our country where there are not enough jobs which is not good enough. It is also to bring the attention of world leaders to climate change, the global food crisis and all that.
It’s interesting that the young ones are coming to do stuff with Femi, such as Wizkid, Jesse Jagz, etc.
They must appreciate my effort in the industry. Even if some people don’t recognize what I’ve done, if you are in the business, you will recognize what I’ve done. The younger generation has deemed it fit as well. If I were a writer, writers will appreciate me. You cannot but recognize my immense contribution to the entertainment industry in Nigeria. Whether you want to accept it or not, because of envy or whatever your reasons, you cannot even say because I’m Fela’s son, that is why I have achieved whatever I have achieved. I’m the only Nigerian to have been nominated three times at The Grammys.
I may have won it, but try and be nominated to see how difficult it is. I am the first Nigerian to win the KORA and the first Nigerian to win the World Music Awards. When you are in the business, you will see my name in the corridors of the entertainment world but when you are not, you’ll find it difficult to see it. If they are asking me, it’s because they do recognize, appreciate and they love and respect what I’ve done. Having understood this, it is for me to oblige or what should I be arrogant about? If a young man asks me to participate in his work, I will of course do so. I have turned down so many because, I don’t have the time as I still do things for myself.
Like every Sunday, you are always here to perform…
And perform for three hours. It’s not easy to perform for three hours nonstop. It’s only on Sunday that the gate fee is N500 Thursday is a free show. It’s not easy and things are difficult for everybody. And when you are playing week in week out, you can’t expect everybody to be here. We have a good moderate price that keeps the place alive.
What of your tours?
There are problems everywhere; there is the global economy, there is the food crisis, credit crunch, so if I can still thrill my fans with good music I must not complain. I have a lot of friends that are very broke. Though I may not be making money but I can keep my head above water. My band is alive, my music is growing. I understand the difficulties many people are facing, so I can’t complain. Most of the people are in worse condition than I am.
There are lots of things I do that you don’t even hear about in Nigeria. There are collaborations I do in France but because they are French speaking, you don’t get to hear about them. A lot of collaborations done in America but you don’t hear about this. There are a lot of things I don’t just make noise about. I don’t see the essence of making noise about them. I just do my work.
Even if, I weren’t Fela’s son, I’m sure I’ll be under pressure (general laughter). That is life.
These days, celebrities buy flashy cars and make so much noise about it…
Who told you they are happy about it? Don’t be deceived about materialism. You’re not there. You think that many of your leaders that are very unpopular don’t want to be popular? They just don’t know how to be popular. They keep doing the wrong things and make matters worse. You won’t want to be in their shoes.
What’s your take on the trend of the young ones who record music that don’t address social issues like you do?
They are young and I cannot criticize what they are doing. I’m not a music critic and I don’t have anything
